Beijing Opera Peking Opera, Chinese

Peking opera is a Chinese national treasure with a history of 200 years. It  has “singing” (chang, 唱), “dialogue”
(nian,念),”acting (zuo, 做) and “acrobatics” {da, 打) as its basic performing forms. Nowhere else in the world can
you see a performer in heavy, opulent costume, so artfully singing, miming, turning flips, and brandishing swords.
Neophytes may find two hours of the staccato clanging and nasal singing of Beijing opera hard to take (and most
young Chinese fed on a diet of western-style pop agree). But this dramatic, colorful experience might be one of
the most memorable of your trip.

1)Masks
The colors of the performers’ painted faces symbolize the individual characters’ qualities. Red indicates devotion,
courage bravery, uprightness and loyalty. A typical “red face” is Guan Yu, general of the period of the Three
Kingdoms (220-280), famed for his faithfulness to his Emperor, Liu Bei. Black symbolizes roughness and
fierceness. The black face indicates either a rough and bold character or an impartial and selfless personality.
Typical of the former are General Zhang Fei (of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms) and Li Kui (of Water
Margin), and of the latter is Bao Gong (alias Bao Zheng), the semi-legendary fearless and impartial judge of the
Song Dynasty.White suggests sinisterness, treacherousness, suspiciousness and craftiness. Commonly seen on
the stage is the white face for the powerful villain. It highlights all that is bad in human nature: cunning, craftiness,
and treachery. Typical characters are Cao Cao, powerful and cruel prime minister in the time of the Three
Kingdoms, and Qin Hui, treacherous Song Dynasty prime minister who put the national hero Yue Fei to death.

2)Acrobatics
Beijing Opera is a form of “total theater” with singing, speech, mime, and acrobatics that combine graceful
gymnastics and movements from the martial arts. Training is notoriously hard. Costumes are designed to make
the jumps seen more spectacular by billowing out as they spin. (See a Video clip of acrobatics)

3)Musical instruments
Despite the dramatic visual elements of Beijing Opera, the Chinese say that they go to “listen” to opera, not to
see it. The importance of the musical elements should not therefore be underestimated. Typically six or seven
musicians accompany the dramatics. The stringed instruments usually include the erhu, or Chinese two-stringed
violin, sanxian or three-stringed lute, and moon guitar, or possibley pipa(traditional lute). while percussion
includes instruments such as clappers, gong, and drums.
4)Sheng
There are four main role types in Beijing Opera:Sheng (male), dan(female), jing(painted face), and chou(clown).
The Sheng (生) is the main male role in Beijing opera. This role has numerous subtypes. The laosheng is a
dignified older role. These characters have a gentle and cultivated disposition and wear sensible costumes. One
type of laosheng role is the hongsheng, a red-faced older male. The only two hongsheng roles are Guan Gong,
the Chinese God of War, and Zhao Kuang-yin, the first Song Dynasty emperor. Young male characters are
known as xiaosheng. These characters sing in a high, shrill voice with occasional breaks to represent the voice
changing period of adolescence. The wusheng is a martial character for roles involving combat. They are highly
trained in acrobatics, and have a natural voice when singing.

5)Dan
The Dan (旦) refers to any female role in Beijing opera. Dan roles were originally divided into five subtypes. Old
women were played by laodan, martial women were wudan, young female warriors were daomadan, virtuous and
elite women were qingyi, and vivacious and unmarried women were huadan. One of Mei Lanfang’s most
important contributions to Beijing opera was in pioneering a sixth type of role, the huashan. This role type
combines the status of the qingyi with the sensuality of the huadan.

6)Jing (hualian)
The Jing (净) is a painted face male role. Jing represent warriors, heroes, statesmen, adventurers, and demons.
Not only are these characters the most striking looking but they also usually have the most forceful personalities.
Beijing opera boasts 15 basic facial patterns, but there are over 1000 specific variations. Each design is unique
to a specific character. The patterns and coloring are thought to be derived from traditional Chinese color
symbolism and divination on the lines of a person’s face, which is said to reveal personality. Three main types of
Jing roles are often seen. These include tongchui, roles that heavily involve singing, jiazi, roles with less
emphasis on singing and more on physical performance, and wujing, martial and acrobatic roles

7)Chou
The chou are the comic characters and they are denoted by white patches on their noses. Patches of different
shape and size mean roles of different character. It is the chou who keep the audience laughing.
8)Mei Lanfang (1894-1961)  梅兰芳
Mei Lanfang was the foremost male interpreter of the female role(dan) during Beijing Opera’s  heyday in the
1920s and 1930s. Traditionaly all female roles were played by male actors, although no longer. Visitors who are
keen to learn more about Meilangfang while in Beijing can visit the former residence of Mei Lanfang at Huguosi.
On exhibition are Mei lanfang’s personal collections of books, manuscripts, calligraphy, paintings, costumes and
photographs that document his illustrious life. Mei Lanfang, the movie starring Leon Lai and Zhang Ziyi (章子怡)
will be released in December 2008.

9)Repertoire
The traditional repertoire includes more than 1,000 works, mostly based on popular tales. Modern productions
aimed at tourists often include English-language displays of the text.

Yuanmingyuan Old Summer Palace, Imperial Summer Palace

The Yuan Ming Yuan (Garden of Perfect Brightness, also known as yuanmingyuan remains park)
now sits isolated from the main Summer Palace, but was a grand collection of palaces by the Qing
Qianlong emperor in the mid-18th century. He commissioned Jesuits at his court to design and
construct a set of European-style buildings in one corner, which they likened to Versailles.
Unfortunately, Yungmingyuan was destroyed by British and French troops during the Second
Opium War in 1860 and again by eight allied foreign forces in 1900.

Perhaps the most remarkable structure in yuanmingyuan was a zodiac water clock fountain which
spouted from 12 bronze heads, Four of which (an ox, a monkey, a tiger and a pig) are now
housed in the impressive Poly Art Museum at the avant-garde building new poly plaza. (see below
for the status of the remaining animal sculptures.)

The palace is now made up of three idyllic parks: Yuanmingyuan (Garden of Perfect Brightness)
in the west, Wanchunyuan (Garden of 10,000 Springs, known initially as the Garden of Variegated
Spring, Qichunyuan) in the south, and Changchunyuan (Garden of Everlasting Spring), where the
European ruins of marble palaces can be found, in the east. To the west of ruins there’s a fun
labyrinth (wanhuazhen), a reconstruction of the one that was destroyed. After you explore the
ruins, the gardens are great for picnicking, scrambling over rocks, and rowing on the lake

Italian Jesuit painter Giuseppe Castiglione(1688-1766), known also by his Chinese name, Lang Shining (郎世宁) was
commissioned by Emperor Qianlong in 1747 to design and build European-style fountains and palaces (western mansions,
xiyanglou) in the northeast section of yuanminyuan. Jean-Denis Attiret (1702-68) and Ignatius Sichelbarth (1708-80) were
charged with the plans and elevations for the palace buildings, while French scientist Michel Benoist (1715-74, Chinese name:
蔣友仁) supervised construction of the several fountains. Work started at the west end with an ensemble consisting of the
Palace of the Delights of Harmony (Xieqiqu, Chinese: 谐奇趣) on the north flanked by a Water Storage Hall(Xushuilou) on the
west and and an Aviary(Yangquelong, Chinese: 养雀笼) on the east (ca.1747-51). This suite has been compared to the now
lost Trianon de Porcelaine of Versailles (ca. 1670). The largest portion of the project was a strip extending west to east about
770m by 60m with Belvedere (Fangwaiguan, Chinese: 方外观) and Calm Sea Hall (Haiyantang, Chinese: 海晏堂). Both were
elevated structures complemented by fountains. Nude statues commonly found in European gardens were not allowed in
Qianlong’s European-style garden. Instead, The Hall of Calm Sea has a zodiac fountain (clepsydra) with water spouts in the
form of twelve bronze animal heads, one for each two-hour division of the day (or zodiac) as a water clock. The fountain did
not long function. Pumps designed by Benoist broke down. In later years palace eunuchs were required to carry buckets of
water to fill the tanks prior to imperial visits. To the east the Great Fountain (DA Shuifa, Chinese: was complemented
by a viewing area opposite for the imperial throne (Guan Shuifa)

Poly Art Museum – Beijing

This very impressive museum, recently moved to the Beijing’s avant-garde building New Poly Plaza and located in
the 8-story lantern which literally hangs from the main structure, was established in 1998 to promote traditional art
and to protect Chinese art from being lost to foreign countries. The museum has focused on the overseas
acquisition of ancient bronzes, sculpture, and painting.

In May 2000, the museum made news headline when it spent $4 million to buy three bronze animal heads (ox,
monkey and tiger) at auctions in Hong Kong. The bronze pig head was donated to the Poly Art Museum in 2003.
All four heads are now part of the collections of the Poly Art Museum. The heads had been part of a zodiac
fountain at the Old Summer Palace near Beijing, designed by a European Jesuit in the mid-18th century, and were
looted by French and English troops when they razed the estate in 1860.

The museum is divided into two galleries, one for the display of Chinese bronzes from as early as the Shang
Dynasty (17th-11th century BC), and the other for Buddhist scriptures carved in stone from the Wei, Ji, Tang and
other dynasties. The most rare and valuable single bronze and the most fascinating object to scrutinize is the
ornate bronze ceremonial wine vessel (shenmian you, see the photo below) with the face of a deity and various
birds and other figures and a gorgeous blue-green patina. Unusually well preserved and made with exceptional
skill, it dates from the western Zhou period, from the 11th to 8th centuries B.C.

Bronze Wine Vessel from Western Zhou Period at Poly Art Museum

Bronze Wine Vessel “Shenmian You” from Early Western Zhou
Period – Poly Art Museum’s most prized possession

The most important piece to have been returned from overseas to
date is a bronze you with faces of `divinities’ on the lid and body
and is believed to have originated in Shaanxi province and was
acquired in Hong Kong. There are identical inscriptions of five
characters in two rows inside the lid and on the base. The vessel
has been ascribed to the early Western Zhou period on the basis
of its style and the form of the characters. The overall composition
of this you is very unusual, but authenticators are convinced it is
genuine. It is generally believed in the purchase price for the you
was around RMB8 million.Phoenix_Western_Zhou_Dynasty_Poly_Art_Museum

The Chinese started to worship the phoenix as the guardian
spirit of the nation more than 3,000 years ago, even before they
began to adore the dragon.

The extremely beautiful phoenix wine vessel (Zun), 49
centimetres tall and 41 centimetres long, is almost three times
the height of the two thought to be in the United States, which
are both apparently only 17.5 centimetres tall. It can be dated
back to the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046-771 BC).

The bronze wine vessel is in the shape of a phoenix standing
with its head raised, eyes opened wide, wings and tail spread.
The “phoenix” has a crest in the shape of a blooming flower on
the top of its “head.” And on its “back” there is a smaller
“phoenix” standing leisurely with its wings nestled against its
“belly.” The smaller bird functions as a handle on the top of the
vessel’s cover, which is part of the large bird’s back. Complex
and exquisite patterns, including dragons, cover the two birds’ bodies.

Rongsheng Chime Bell at Poly Art Museum_??????Set of Eight Western Zhou-period rongsheng yong bells
Bronze
Largest bell: height 51.7 cm

The bells are unusual in that they form a complete set, which is
confirmed by the 154-character inscription, sections of which
appear on each of the bells. The inscription includes the name
Rong Sheng, the ruler of the Rong state. Each bell is capable of
producing two notes.
