  • NBA All Star Marbury signs up for China League

Former NBA All-Star Stephon Marbury signs with Chinese team

Twice NBA All Star point guard Stephon Marbury will become the highest profile American to play in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) after he agreed to join China’s  Shanxi Club.

The 32-year-old, a free agent since leaving the Boston Celtics last season, had agreed a deal with the northern club and would arrive in Shanxi next week, the team announced on their official website (www.sxcba.com).

“The aim of signing Marbury is to pay back our fans and try to win more games in the rest of the season,” said Shanxi boss Wang Xingjiang.

The 2001 and 2003 NBA All Star was expected to help boost Shanxi’s ticket sales as well as their chances of making the playoffs. Shanxi is currently 15th in the 17-team league.

Wang added that Marbury’s salary would not be too high because the former New Jersey Nets and Phoenix Suns player wanted to promote his personal shoe brand, Starbury,  in China.

Starbury is a shoe and clothing brand endorsed by NBA players Stephon Marbury and Ben Wallace

Shanxi last season hired former NBA player Bonzi Wells, who scored as many as 50 points a game. The contract ended after less than two months when Wells went on holiday but failed to return on time.

The International Basketball League, a spring basketball league composed primarily of teams based in North America, said on its Web site that Shanxi Zhongyu would participate in the I.B.L.’s 2010 season, playing its first game May 14 in Oregon.

The 32-year-old Marbury, a two-time All-Star,  played 13 seasons in the NBA with Minnesota, New Jersey, Phoenix, New York and Boston. He averaged 19.3 points in his career.

He played 23 games with the Celtics last season after a messy split from the Knicks.

He began last season with the Knicks before Coach Mike D’Antoni effectively exiled him from the organization. D’Antoni placed Marbury on the inactive list to start the season, and after the team became beset with injuries, Marbury declined D’Antoni’s offer to play.

Marbury reached a buyout near the end of the season and joined theBoston Celtics. He played scant minutes there.

The Celtics offered Marbury a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum after the season. He declined, saying he wanted to take a year off to pursue business interests.

    • New York Giants Jersey

Former NBA All Star guard Stephon Marbury has rejected a move to the Miami Heat to re-sign with China’s Shanxi Zhongyu.

Local media reported that the 33-year-old would stay after penning a three-year contract with the “Brave Dragons,” who have agreed to help him promote his athletic shoe brand in China.

“Shanxi Zhongyu makes a quality offer,” Marbury told the state-run Xinhua news agency.

“(Miami) wanted a point guard but I don’t think a point guard would do much in the team as they’ve already had the three guys (Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh).”

Marbury, who played a half season with the Shanxi Zhongyu last campaign, averaged 19.3 points, 7.6 assists and 3.0 rebounds in his 13 years in the NBA.

Marbury — the first player to appear in both an NBA and a CBA All-Star game — is by far the biggest foreign star ever to play in China, and one of several US players breathing new life into the league.

The former Minnesota, New Jersey, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks and Boston Celtics point guard had been linked with a return to the NBA.

But Marbury’s deal in China offers him the opportunity to promote his “Starbury” brand of shoes in the country’s booming athletic apparel market.

Three stores selling “Starbury” products will be opened in the city of Taiyuan, where the team plays, following the start of the new season.

    • Allen Iverson ‘unlikely’ to play in China

If Iverson follows all-star guard Stephon Marbury to China, the country could boast two of the best guards in the game, albeit both a few years past their athletic peaks. Iverson, like Marbury, may have lost a step, but that still leaves him a few dozen steps ahead of his competition in China, where he would be playing in front of crowds hungry for star power.

It sounds like Iverson wants too much money, which is unsurprising even though there aren’t any NBA teams vying for his services. Even if he does land on a team in the U.S. I don’t anticipate reliable fantasy value.
