Nanluoguxiang is brilliant for backpackers as it has the advantage of being near cafés and restaurants with English menus
and western food, without being horrendously touristy, overpriced or full of touts. The hostel is quiet and homely, nicely
central with English speaking staff and well connected with buses. Free western style breakfast prepared by the five-star
hotel chef, one of the founders of Beijing Downtown Backpackers Accommodations.

Address: 22 Banchang Hutong, Kuan Jie, Dongcheng District
Transportation: Subway Line 2 at  Dongzhimen
Phone: 010-6404-0436
Rates: RMB 300 single; RMB 490 double
Services: Business centre. Internet (shared terminal). No-smoking rooms. Restaurant, TV.

Originally built in the Qing Dynasty for General Zeng Ge Ling Qin, his pad now attracts tourists who want to stay somewhere
with character. Some guests gripe about the slightly shabby rooms, but relaxing in the Qing-style courtyard, complete with
caged birds, more than makes up for it. Rooms come with their own bathrooms, but the quality and size of the rooms varies
enormously, so ask to take a look before opening your wallet.

  • City Central International Youth Hostel 北京城市青年酒店

Address: 1 Beijing Zhan Qian Jie, Dongcheng district
Phone: 010-6525-8866
Cost: Dormitory bed 60RMB, double with en-suite 288RMB
Transportation: Subway Line 2 at Beijing Railway Station (one minute walk)
Website:
www.centralhostel.com
Map of Beijing City Central International Youth Hostel

What this hostel (a member of Hostelling International) lacks in charm it makes up for in convenience. Located on the
doorway of the metro opposite the railway station, the noisy traffic, hordes of people and touts who try to pack you off to
Tianjin might get annoying if you have to stay here for a while. If you're just passing through and need a bed for a night
then this is probably your best option.

  • Jade International Youth Hostel  北京西华智德饭店

Address: 5 Zhidebeixiang, Beiheyan Dajie, Dongcheng district
Phone: 010-6525-9966).
Cost: RMB580 Suite; RMB420/rm with private bath; RMB300/rm with shared bath; RMB80/bed(4 person dorms); RMB70/bed
(8 person dorms)
Transportation: Subway Line 1 at Tiananmen West (10 minutes walk).

Map of Beijing Jade International Youth Hostel

Jade is a good all-rounder. It's near the Forbidden City and Tiananmen and it's clean with good facilities. Staff are friendly
and rooms are luxurious. The tour services have had mixed reviews though, so be warned.

  • Lama Temple International Youth Hostel 雍和国际青年旅舍

Address: 56 Beixinqiao Toutiao, Yonghegong Dajie, Dongcheng district
Phone: 010-6402-8663
Cost: Dormitory bed 60RMB, double room with en-suite 220RMB
Transportation: Subway Line 1 at Beixinqiao (one minute walk).

Only five minutes walk from the
Lama Temple and the Gui Jie food street, this youth hostel is not only well located, but also
one of the friendliest in town. Its impressive main room boasts a throne and a ceiling is covered in Tibetan-inspired patterns;
similar attention has been giving to the designs of the guest rooms. A word of warning, the ground floor rooms lack natural
light: make sure you set an alarm clock, especially if you are jetlagged, or you might find yourself starting the day out mid-
afternoon.

  • Leo Hostel 广聚元宾馆
Address: 52 Dazhalan Xijie, Chongwen district
Phone: 010-6303-1595
Cost: Dormitory bed 45RMB, double with en-suite 200RMB;
Transportation: Subway Line 2 at Qianmen (10 minutes walk).
Website:
www.leohostel.com

Being a stone's throw from Tiananmen doesn't make Leo's any easier to find. When you eventually do, you'll realise you've
reached one of Beijing's most sociable hostels, with a comfy communal area everyone gathers in to chat. However not
everyone will appreciate this, especially in the early hours when guests are still nattering and DVDs still blaring. Leo's
organise a Secret Wall tour to a stunning, remote section of the Wall, a hike that's physically demanding but comes highly
recommended.

  • Lotus Hostel 北京莲舍

Address: 29 Xisi Beiqitiao, Xicheng district
Phone: 010-6612-8341
Cost: Dormitory bed 50RMB, double room with en-suite 200RMB
Transportation: Subway Line 2 at Chegongzhuang (20 minutes walk).
Website:
www.lotushostel.cn
Map of Lotus Hostel

One of Beijing's most beautiful and atmospheric hostels, Lotus offers you the chance to stay in a traditional Chinese
residence, set in a central but peaceful hutong. It comprises two floors of guestrooms opening up onto a central courtyard.
The rooms contain traditional Chinese furniture and paintings and are lovely and clean. Friendly staff speak good English
and arrange tours and onward trips.

  • Friendship Youth Hostel (Poachers Inn, Youyi Youth Hostel, 北京友谊青年酒店)

Address: 43 Bei Sanlitun Nan Lu (behind 3.3 Mall), Chaoyang District
Phone: 010-6417-2632
Website:
www.poachers.com.cn
Rates: RMB 70 dorm; RMB 180 single/double
Services: Bars (1). Internet (shared terminal). No smoking floors. Restaurants (1). TV room.
Credit cards: Mastercard, Visa

If you like to party and you’re on a budget then Poachers is the place for you. Located in the heart of Sanlitun’s bar area,
British fish and chips at
Fish Nation (010-6415 0119), a Belgian pub and several shooter bars are but steps away. So is the
Tree Bar. The downside to being at the heart of the action is that in summer this busy backstreet is riddled with beggars
and drug dealers. Rooms are either twin-bed or dorms consisting of four bunk beds. The private rooms are of a perfectly
decent quality for the price, but dorms are old and haggard, with flimsy mattresses and frosted windows. Daily breakfast and
laundry are included in the price and a squat toilet (with toilet roll) and four showers per two rooms are relatively clean.
Rough and ready all the way.

  • Beijing Zhaolong International Youth Hostel 北京兆龙国际青年旅舍, 兆龙饭店

Address: 2 Gongti Bei Lu, Chaoyang District
Phone: 010-6597-2666
Rates: RMB 60 dorm; RMB 180 double; RMB 350 double en-suite
Transportation: Subway line 2 at Dongsishitiao
Credit cards: AmEx, DC, MC, V
Website(slow connection):
www.zhaolonghotel.com.cn
Free Wi-Fi internet access 免费无线上网

Tucked behind the Zhaolong Hotel proper down a nondescript alley is this two-story grey-brick youth hostel. It has standard
facilities, with the added bonus that guests are able to use the main hotel’s gym. The place has been around for a while and
it shows as its utilitarian dorms, rooms and reception areas demonstrate, but the sunny restaurant and bar (which serves up
a RMB 15 breakfast) with trellises and plants tumbling down give the place some charm. Staff will also arrange Chinese
classes if you are that way inclined. Really though, it’s all about location: despite being in a very quiet back-street, the
hostel is stumbling distance from party central, aka Sanlitun, with its cheap and cheerful bars and restaurants, but beware:
doors close at 1am to prevent unruly revellers.

  • Red Lantern House  北京红灯笼客栈
the best hostel in Asia for 2005 by Hostelworld.com

Address: 5 Zhengjue Hutong, Xinjiekou Nandajie, Xicheng District, Beijing
Phone: 010-8328-5771
Rates: RMB 60 dorm; RMB 120 double; RMB 160 double with en-suite
Website:
www.redlanternhouse.com

This homely place around a converted courtyard is a challenge to find, but persevere if you want the hutong experience at
a cut-price rate. The owners, keen to give visitors a good impression of Beijing, go that extra mile in helping you arrange
tours or onward tickets. The traditional Chinese décor doesn’t extend to the bedrooms, but they are acceptable and well-
heated, something that’s important during the winter months.
Hostelworld.com users voted Red Lantern House the best hostel in Asia for 2005,

  • Beijing Saga International Youth Hostel 北京实佳国际青年旅舍

Address: 9 Shijia Hutong, Nan Xiaojie, Dongcheng District
Phone: 010-6527-2773
Transportation: Subway Line 1 or L2 at Dongdan

The somewhat ironically named Beijing Saga International Youth Hostel is a hostelling International hostel offering clean
budget accommodation in central Beijing (hostelling International members get a discount). Facilities are quite adequate,
service is good and the staff speak reasonable English. The building is functional more than charming, but the surrounding
area is a very typical Beijing hutong. A free breakfast is included in the price. The hostel is twenty minutes walk from Beijing
Railway Station;
the Forbidden City, Wangfujing and Tiananmen Square are all a short car journey away. The entrance to
the hostel itself is not particularly well signed, but you can recognize it from the blue Hostelling International sign on the roof.

  • Beijing Far East International Youth Hostel 北京远东青年旅舍

Address: 90 Tieshu Xie Jie, Xuanwu District, Beijing 100050
Phone: 010-5195-8811
Rates: RMB60 Dorm; RMB 328 Double
Transportation: Subway Line 2 at Hepingmen
Website:
www.fareastyh.com
Map of Beijing Far East International Youth Hostel

Beijing Far East International Youth Hostel is very popular with guests and one of our favourites. It was once described as
‘one of Beijing’s best kept secrets’ but the secret’s not really been kept for years, so get here before everyone else does.
The hostel combines a charming old-style Beijing courtyard with a larger modern dormitory block. The courtyard part is
beautiful, the dormitory building functional. The location is excellent, just a few blocks Southwest of Qianmen, Tiananmen
Square and the Forbidden City (15-20 mins walk), a short car journey from Wangfujing shopping district, and close to the
Hepingmen subway station. Service is good and staff speak English.

Website:
www.hostelsbeijing.com/en/index_dongdan.html
Beijing Eastern Morning Sun Youth Hostel Location Map

The hostel is four floors underground and there's a slight institutional feel in place, but wow, what a central location and
what a price. There are no dorms, just small tiled-floor rooms that share bath and haven't a frill to speak of. For the super-
budget traveller who needs privacy, it's ideal.

The clientele here seems largely Chinese, so it's a great spot if you want to mix with the locals. The staff speak some
English, but will probably appreciate it if you can communicate in Mandarin. Like most other hostels in Beijing this place has
laundry, Internet access and a travel centre. Rooms are bare bones, but come with bedding and towels. The tiny singles
have no TVs, but pricier doubles do. Despite an address in the upscale Oriental Plaza just east of the shopping street,
Wangfujing Dajie, cheap eats are easy to find in the nearby markets and on Donganmen Dajie. You're pretty much in the
centre of town here, and in one of the most popular tourist areas, so expect the neighbourhood to be crowded in the peak
season.

arrangement. Surrounded by three parks,

the hostel is located by the side of the Second Ring Road in the south of Beijing with Bianyifang Roast Duck Restaurant,
Hongqiao Pearl Market, New World Department Store and Panjiayuan Antique Market nearby. It is only 5 minutes walking
distance to the Temple of Heaven where Emperors worshiped their ancestors in the ancient time. Today many people
practice Taiji (Shadowing boxing) there in the early morning, and you will probably get a chance to learn a bit. Not far away
