Your ultimate pampering experience
A complete Guide to massage and spas in Beijing

Massage (Anmo, tuina, 推拿, 按摩), manicures and other self-indulgent delights are plentiful, reasonably priced
and available around the clock. Whether you fancy a no-frills full body rub down at a blind massage parlor or
an aromatically scented foot rub fit for an emperor, Beijing’s massage joints are affordable and the ideal way to
relax and wind down.

Plush day spas are the newest edition to the pampering scene. Touch Spa, Mandara Spa and I Spa boast
international quality and service standards, but without a Western price tag. Other traditional forms of therapy
such as Japanese Shiatsu, and Thai, Hawaiian and Swedish massage, are also becoming standard spa menu
choices.

Mangren anmo (blind massage) or Zudi anmo (foot massage) may be experienced at the friendly Lesheng
Mangren Baojian Anmo Zhongxin.  Both are firm, but thoroughly rejuvenating. You can also try cupping (fire
cupping, ba huo guan, ba guan, Chinese: 拔火罐), in which hot glass jars are used to suck out bad energy from
your back, leaving funny-looking red welts.

What is cupping?
Cupping (fire cupping, ba huo guan or ba guan) is a method of applying acupressure by creating a vacuum
next to the patient's skin. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) it involves placing glass, plastic, or bamboo
cups on the skin with a vacuum. The therapy is used to relieve what is called "stagnation" in TCM terms, and is
used in the treatment of respiratory diseases such as the common cold, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Cupping is
also used to treat back, neck, shoulder, and other musculoskeletal pain.  The therapy is said to influence the
flow of both Qi and Blood throughout the body and or meridians. Cupping is a safe, non-invasive, and an
inexpensive technique. Cupping is generally considered a painless procedure. Cupping causes blood to be
drawn to the surface of the skin. Red marks, swelling, and circular bruising can appear. These marks will
subside with in a few hours or days.

Tucked up on the 17th floor of the eastside Ritz-Carlton is their new spa, which promises a sophisticated retreat
from the stresses of life in Beijing’s CBD. The chic, classical decor offers a marked contrast to the
contemporary Asian style favored on the other end of town at the hotel’s Financial Street spa location. Sharing
the floor with this spa is the rather impressive state-of-the-art gym (unfortunately only open to hotel guests).
The advantage to the spa’s lofty location lies in the glorious light that bathes the entire floor. Whilst current
views from the treatment rooms’ balconies tend to look out over vast construction sites, the landscape should
improve as the city moves closer to the Olympics. In terms of treatments on offer, the spa does not disappoint.
With everything from basics such as foot massages (RMB 400) and manicures (RMB 300) to high-tech
treatments using some fairly terrifying-looking equipment, you’re literally spoiled for choice. We decided to
forgo the science bit and opted for the Ritz Fusion signature treatment (RMB 980), a 90-minute package which
featured a soothing massage using a pack of heated Oriental herbs. The therapist was friendly and
professional, honing in on problem areas rather than sticking to a set pattern, which was greatly appreciated.
All in all, the spa offers a very civilized and soothing retreat. Spa lovers should definitely check it out.

Hawaiian and Swedish massage and body wraps. The spa packages, which include a massage and wrap, are
the best value.

Top Ten Spas in Beijing

1) 爱上spa——i spa

Zenspa
